Teen accused of assault, resisting arrest at fair
BAZETTA — A 15-year-old girl was arrested Sunday night at the Trumbull County Fair after being accused of assaulting a mounted deputy and resisting arrest, according to a Trumbull County Sheriff’s Office report.
The incident occurred around 9:10 p.m. at Gate B of the fairgrounds, 899 Everett Hull Road, according to the report. She faces charges of assault, a fourth-degree felony, and resisting arrest, a second-degree misdemeanor.
Deputies responded to reports of a large fight involving 15 to 20 people. By the time they arrived, the altercation had ended, and deputies, along with Bazetta Township police and the Trumbull County Mounted Unit, began escorting the involved parties out of the fairgrounds.
According to the report, the teen, a Cortland resident, resisted orders to leave and attempted to push her way back into the fairgrounds. When unsuccessful, she swung a small black purse with a 2-foot strap, striking a mounted deputy and her horse twice. The teen also reportedly struck the horse with her fists on its chest, neck and shoulder.
Deputy Jacob Daley intervened, grabbing the teen by her left arm and informing her she was under arrest. The teen became physically combative, pulling away and continuing to resist as she was taken to the ground, the report states. With assistance from a Bazetta police officer, the teen was handcuffed, but continued to resist, shouting threats, including, “I’ll beat your (expletive) ass.”
The teen slipped out of her handcuffs at one point and attempted to flee while seated on a golf cart used by deputies. A deputy assisted in restraining her, reapplying the handcuffs, the report states. The teen allegedly threatened to spit in a deputy’s face and attempted to kick both him and another deputy.
The report states it took about 20 minutes for her to calm down enough for deputies to obtain her information.
The teen sustained a small scrape on her left knee, which was treated by EMS at the scene. She was then transported to the Trumbull County Juvenile Justice Center, where she was turned over to corrections staff.
The investigation is ongoing, with no additional arrests reported at this time.
