McDonald plans summer festival
McDONALD — The village will hold its annual firefighters homecoming festival Wednesday through June 28 at Woodland Park off Ohio Avenue.
The festival has taken place for more than 90 years and brings families home for the summer.
Councilman Kyles Joynes, chairman of the festival committee, said at Thursday’s council meeting that the annual Run of the Mill race will be 5:45 p.m. Wednesday along Ohio Avenue followed by the parade at 6 p.m. Those in the parade are to meet by 5:30 p.m. at the road department garage.
The parade marshal is McDonald High School senior Drew Zajack. The parade will feature boys and girls sports teams from the high school who earned honors and achievements this past school year.
Joynes said the festival will be 6 to 10 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and include amusement rides, bingo, games, vendors and musical entertainment.
Mayor Ray Lewis said the village is preparing for the July 4 season and reminded residents that fireworks may be set off between 4 and 11 p.m. July 3, 4 and 5. The state allows fireworks on designated holidays. He asked residents to be safe when setting off fireworks and be respectful of neighbor’s properties.
Lewis also held a moment of silence in memory of longtime former mayor Thomas Hannon who died recently. Lewis said he held many talks with Hannon on the village and school system and appreciated his help.
“We had many good discussions,” Lewis said.
Hannon served as mayor from 1973 to 1998 and had also served on village council and the board of education.
Lewis also reported he traveled to Columbus where he met with state representatives and senators on needs of the village and what funds may be available for projects.
In other business, resident Pam Sowers of Park Avenue told officials of her concerns with speeding vehicles especially on days when there are sporting events and activities at Woodland Park.
Sowers said the drivers go around the speed bump in the road.
She said she is concerned for people’s safety since children ride bikes and residents are walking their dogs in the neighborhood.
“These cars are flying down the street. I am worried someone is going to get hurt. I will not walk my dog anymore when there is a game going on,” Sowers said.
Lewis told Sowers to contact the police with any speeding concerns.
