Commissioners OK $65K for MetroParks operations
WARREN — Trumbull County commissioners voted unanimously Friday to allocate $65,000 to the Trumbull County MetroParks, ensuring the parks remain open through the end of 2025.
Commissioners Denny Malloy, Rick Hernandez and Tony Bernard approved the funding during their rescheduled regular meeting, providing critical support for the park system’s operations.
The decision comes as the MetroParks faced uncertainty about its budget earlier this week. Executive Director Zachary Svette previously stated that the park system’s financial situation was tight, with operations potentially at risk without additional funding. The MetroParks board has scheduled a special meeting for 4:15 p.m. Tuesday to finalize its 2025 budget and operational plans in light of the approved funds.
MetroParks Board member Kurt Sauer earlier noted that a lack of funding would have forced a comprehensive review of all budget items, potentially leading to closures or reduced services.
Svette said the parks are open and portable restrooms are available through July 31.
In addition to budget concerns, Svette reported damage to a section of the bike trail between Dunkerton and Peck Leach roads in Bloomfield, caused by beavers tunneling beneath the path where an observation deck once stood.
The 30-by-70-foot damaged section requires repairs estimated at $3,500.
Svette said oil and gas reserve funds, not grant money, will be used for the project, which will be discussed at next week’s meeting.
