Cortland nixes associate service director positions
CORTLAND — City council has created a new position of compliance coordinator while eliminating the job description of two associate service director positions.
Council at its meeting Monday approved the compliance coordinator position, which will be one employee — Michael Smith — instead of two separate associate service director positions.
Interim Service Director Sean Ratican told council he believes it is in the city’s best interest to create the position of compliance coordinator within the Department of Public Service to take on the responsibilities of supporting the service department, conducting water monitoring activities, ensuring compliance with Environmental Protection Agency mandates and zoning compliance.
The compliance coordinator shall be under the supervision of the Director of Public Service, according to the job description. Job responsibilities include administrative job functions essential to support the service department. The compliance coordinator will review, assess and analyze eligibility for or adherence to laws and regulations related to compliance of licenses and permits.
Council President Kevin Piros said officials decided that the two associate service directors — Smith and Jason McCollum — will be better aligned under other tasks. McCollum will return to his previous position as an employee in the service department.
“There will not be any associate service director positions,” he said.
Officials said Smith will be paid $25 per hour as compliance coordinator. It is the same pay he was receiving as associate service director. McCollum also will be paid the same amount he was making as a road department employee.
Mayor Deidre Petrosky said the city received a favorable and in compliance EPA audit thanks to the work of the two associate service directors. Piros said no employees lost their jobs with the change of position.
