Bristol establishes guidelines for war memorial at center

BRISTOL — After receiving questions from some residents at recent meetings, township trustees have established criteria and guidelines on whose names can be placed on the war memorial at the township center.

Trustee Chairman Doug Seemann said at Tuesday’s meeting the memorial has been at the center for years with names of local veterans who served during World War II, Korea, Vietnam and other wars. The war memorial eligibility policy is that an individual must have served in a branch of the United States armed forces.

The veteran must meet one of the following criteria: born in Bristol, enlisted in the armed forces while residing in the township or living in the township for 25 or more years.

Also, the veteran must have been honorably discharged from military service. The veteran must also have served during a period of conflict or war as defined by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Seemann said the veteran must provide a copy of the DD214 form to confirm military service, discharge status and eligibility. He said the veteran, family of the veteran, or sponsor of the veteran shall pay for the engraving on the memorial.

Officials said applications for inclusion on the memorial can be submitted by the veteran, their family members or other representative accompanied by all necessary documentation including proof of eligibility and connection to the township.

Applications will be reviewed by the trustees.

CEMETERY RULE UPDATE

Trustees also updated the cemetery policies to include a new section.

Residents have to receive permission from the cemetery sexton on where they can place trees or shrubbery at the cemeteries.

Also being discussed is to have waterproof display cases on rules and regulations at the cemeteries and the township administration building.

Trustee Jeff Waldeck said trustees plan to put in a new gazebo at the center park. American Rescue Plan funds are being used for the project.

He said he wants to have the project at least started before the monthly food trailer Fridays that begin May 9.

Starting at $3.23/week.
