Youngstown man arrested in Liberty catalytic converter theft

LIBERTY — Township police moved quickly as they apprehended a Youngstown man in the midst of stealing an SUV’s catalytic converter Tuesday.

Danny Daviduk, 46, pleaded not guilty to charges of drug paraphernalia, vandalism, possessing criminal tools, receiving stolen property and theft at his arraignment Wednesday morning.

According to the police report, an officer was on patrol southbound on Belmont Avenue when he noticed a dark colored sedan next to a vehicle for sale in a parking lot near the road.

The officer noted that the person — later identified as Daviduk — was underneath a gold-colored Chevrolet Trailblazer, and the officer heard a battery-powered handheld saw as he left his vehicle. His canine partner barked at Daviduk and upon the arrival of two other officers, he was handcuffed and detained as they investigated further.

The report states that after arresting Daviduk, the officer removed a Dewalt handheld saw with a blade from underneath the SUV and noticed a fresh cut mark on its catalytic converter’s pipe.

He checked the vehicle next to it — a Chevrolet Impala and its plates — and found a burnt spoon on its passenger side and a clear jar of a white powdery substance, which the police dog reacted to, the police report states. Bullet holes also were seen in the passenger side of the vehicle’s frame.

The report states officers contacted the gold SUV’s owner, who confirmed no one was to be working on the vehicle and that he had recently replaced the muffler and catalytic converter a week prior to the incident. Daviduk was properly identified and warrants for his arrest were found through Howland’s police department.

Further investigation of the Impala revealed two freshly cut catalytic converters, and car jacks, hand tools, extra batteries and other items used for removing catalytic converters in its trunk.

Daviduk’s bond was set at $2,500. He’s set to appear back in court April 2, court records show.

Starting at $3.23/week.
