Police body camera grants awarded to 4 Trumbull departments
Staff report
Four law enforcement agencies in Mahoning County and four in Trumbull received funding from the state for body cameras.
A total of 131 law enforcement agencies were awarded almost $4.6 million in grants Thursday from the Ohio Department of Public Safety’s Office of Criminal Justice Services. Of those agencies, 21 will use the money to create new body camera programs and 110 will use the money to expand or upgrade existing technology.
In Mahoning County, the Youngstown State University Police Department received $41,548, the Canfield Police Department got $30,000, the sheriff’s office received $17,152 and New Middletown got $1,711.
In Trumbull County, the Liberty Police Department received $36,960, Lordstown got $15,000, Cortland received $6,216 and Warren Township received $4,823.
YSU, New Middletown and Warren Township are among the 21 agencies that will create a body camera program with this funding.
“Body-worn cameras have become an essential tool in law enforcement and I’m pleased that we can help more local agencies equip their officers with them,” Gov. Mike DeWine said.
“There has been high demand for this funding and my executive budget proposes to continue this grant program in the next biennium.”
