Career Center plans for projects at complex

CHAMPION — A 13,800-square foot addition, new cafeteria flooring, a new science lab and other improvements and enhancements are being planned to begin this spring and summer at the Trumbull Career and Technical Center.

Facilities Supervisor Jerry Gorgie told the TCTC board Thursday of the different projects that have been discussed and planned to start at the end of the school year.

Superintendent Jason Gray said groundbreaking will be this spring for the $7 million addition to the southeastern section of the building near the wood trades and carpentry program.

The addition will house industrial technology classes, STEAM Academy programs and a community health center.

Treasurer Cody Holecko has said the $7 million project is being covered with $5.12 million in the Appalachian Community Innovation Center grants program and $2.5 million from the Ohio Career Technical Equipment grant, of which $1 million is left after equipment and furnishings for the rooms were purchased.

He said TCTC will be spending about $750,000 of its own money. Holecko said the project has been put out for bid, and bids should be coming in shortly.

Gray said the DeSalvo Construction Company is the construction manager for the addition. a

He said the project is set to begin in June and is expected to be completed by late summer 2026 for that school year.

“We keep growing the building,” said board member Ronda Bonekovic.

A new equestrian barn was completed earlier this year.

OTHER PROJECTS

Another project planned was replacing the flooring in the cafeteria. The same floor has been in place since the center opened 47 years ago. Gorgie said the cost will be around $125,000.

Gorgie said other planned work includes adding four lifts to the auto collision classroom with lifts provided from NAPA, and the addition of an additional science lab.

He said four additional drinking fountains will be replaced with efficiency units and bottle filters.

Gray said a miniature golf course is being constructed on the campus by students under the guidance of teacher Marissa Brown.

Gorgie said the center is also working with the Geauga Trumbull Solid Waste District to get fencing around the recycling drop-off area in the faculty parking lot.

He said there have been problems with debris at the site.

“We feel the fence will help stop the blowing debris which has been a mess,” Gorgie said.

He said the solid waste district will reimburse the center for the installation of the privacy fence.

Gorgie said other planned projects include updating the roofs in the next few years.

He said the center has five roofs with the newest roof installed in 2019.

“All four other roofs are nearing the end of their life spans and need replaced.” Gorgie said.

There will be three phases of roof work, with two roofs each at $1.5 million, and another near $3 million with total cost for replacing four roofs near $5 million, Gorgie said.

There will also be regular work and upgrades to restrooms, air conditioning and boilers.

He said most of the projects will be done for the 2025-26 school year in late August but a few may carry over into the next school year.

Starting at $2.99/week.
