Niles man loses appeal in 2023 Warren shooting

WARREN — The Ohio 11th District Court of Appeals upheld the conviction of a Niles man, confirming his 11- to 15-year prison sentence for his involvement in a shooting in Warren.

The incident occurred Aug. 25, 2023, in the 1900 block of Hazelwood Avenue SE when 42-year-old Danny Isom shot Eddie Pierce multiple times.

The shooting led to a swift investigation, followed by a trial where a Trumbull County jury deliberated for just under an hour before finding Isom guilty.

During the trial, Trumbull County Assistant Prosecutor Michael Burnett called eight witnesses, including the victim, who identified Isom as the shooter.

Isom, who has an extensive criminal history, including past convictions in Florida, was sentenced by Trumbull County Common Pleas Judge Ronald J. Rice.

Rice noted Isom’s history of violent offenses, which included a robbery conviction from his teens, as well as a recent weapons conviction in Cuyahoga County.

In his appeal, Isom raised several claims, disputing the admission of evidence during the trial, criticizing his counsel’s effectiveness, alleging insufficient evidence and accusing the state of prosecutorial misconduct during cross-examination.

However, the appeals court, led by Judge John J. Eklund and supported by Judges Matt Lynch and Eugene Lucci, dismissed these appeals, ruling that the trial court’s decisions were sound.
