Kinsman completes walkway, section of sidewalk project

KINSMAN — The township has completed the fourth phase of the sidewalk project and walkway in the greenspace area this year with help from American Rescue Plan funds and is beginning to plan for the next phase to be done in 2025 or 2026.

Trustee Greg Leonhard said at Monday’s trustees meeting that phase 4 — which included installation of sidewalks from Church Street to State Street to Main Street to the center square — received $159,460 in ARP funds from the Trumbull County commissioners.

He said the greenspace area where the former Joseph Badger High School was located has a walkway in the area.

Officials said phase 5 will be installation of sidewalks on the east side of Main Street from Lakeview Drive north to state Route 87. There also will be work on sidewalks at the square and Garden Street.

Leonhard said state Issue 2 funds from the Eastgate Regional Council of Governments will cover costs. Work on the new walking path began last summer.

Officials said the nearly 2,000 feet of new sidewalks has been bringing people into the township area known as the Kinsman Green Space. The Friends of Kinsman organization has raised funds for the original building, which will be used for the new project with $1,498 in funds remaining.

Officials said the new sidewalks provide safety for pedestrians to walk from place to place rather than alongside the road.

Plans for the Green Space is to add lighting and benches.

In other business, trustees decided not to build a new building to house police vehicles but instead do work to the eastern side of the fire department building. They cited costs as the reason for abandoning the project.

“We are discussing renovating the existing fire station building. The building that we discussed was not in our price range,” Leonhard said.

Trustees also announced that police will take local children to local stores at 5 p.m. Thursday for Shop with a Cop. Leonhard said each child will receive $200 to spend.

Money was raised from tips the police and firefighters received from a recent fundraiser. Leonhard said local families will receive a coupon to IGA to buy food for a Christmas meal.

Starting at $3.23/week.
