Court upholds conviction in fatal Southington crash

WARREN — The Ohio 11th District Court of Appeals on Monday upheld the conviction and sentence of a Sharpsville, Pa., man for a fatal crash that occurred Nov. 17, 2023, at the intersection of U.S. Route 422 and state Route 305 in Southington.

The crash resulted in the death of 23-year-old Tyler Richmond of Warren, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Joseph P. Yuran, 56, a former Pennsylvania state trooper, was convicted of aggravated vehicular homicide and operating a vehicle under the influence (OVI).

Trumbull County Common Pleas Court Judge Ronald J. Rice in April sentenced him to seven to 10.5 years in prison, issued a lifetime driver’s license suspension, and fined him $1,075. Yuran also was ordered to pay $750 in restitution to Richmond’s family.

Yuran appealed the conviction, asserting three assignments of error: that the court erred in sentencing procedures, violated constitutional protections against cruel and unusual punishment, and relied on factually inaccurate findings to support the sentence. The appellate panel, consisting of Judges Eugene Lucci, Matt Lynch, and John J. Eklund, rejected all claims, ruling the arguments lacked merit and affirming the lower court’s judgment.

Assistant Prosecutor Michael Burnett represented the state during Yuran’s trial, while Assistant Prosecutor Ryan J. Sanders argued on behalf of the state in the appeal.
