Two errors found in Liberty audit
LIBERTY — Township officials reported errors were found in the state’s audit of their finances.
The audit, which was completed last week for 2022 and 2023, revealed two errors: a “material weakness” and a “noncompliance,” it was announced at Tuesday’s regular trustees meeting.
Fiscal Officer Matthew Connelly, who stepped into the role in 2021 after serving as deputy fiscal officer, explained the “material weakness” happened because he wasn’t receiving and dispersing Ohio Public Works Commission funds. He said those funds are paid directly from the OPWC to hired contractors, but the township needs to reflect the funds in its budget.
With the noncompliance, Connelly said he was certifying purchase orders prior to the date listed on invoices he was receiving from department heads and vendors, which isn’t supposed to happen. He said the township did have the funds on hand as required by law.
Out of 30 instances observed in the audit, seven had noncompliance errors, he said. Connelly said his office has put procedures into place to prevent either situation from happening again following a post-audit conference with the state auditors.
In other action, trustees:
• Determined 3031 Green Acres to be a nuisance based on the owner’s maintenance of vegetation, garbage, refuse and other debris.
• Approved removing Joseph Page and Marquan Stevenson from the part-time fire department roster after nonresponsive communications.
