Jury chosen in Warren murder case

Kemari James set to stand trial beginning today in 2020 death of La’Nesha Workman

WARREN — A jury of seven men and five women was selected late Monday in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court for the case of a Warren man accused in the shooting death a pregnant Warren woman.

Attorneys whittled down the jury pool of 36 men and women for a 12-person jury scheduled to begin hearing the case against Kemari D. James.

James, 29, is accused of gunning down La’Nesha Workman, 26, in the 1600 block of Ogden Avenue on April 7, 2020. He faces two counts of murder, one count of attempted murder, aggravated robbery, having weapons under disability and escape.

If convicted, James faces 28 years to life on each murder charge and more than 100 years if found guilty on all charges, which includes two three-year mandatory gun terms.

Trumbull County Assistant Prosecutor Christopher Becker is expected to present more than 100 exhibits of evidence and will call 17 to 18 witnesses.

According to a police report, Workman’s body was discovered after a neighbor alerted police following the shooting. The neighbor had found the woman’s body and her two crying children inside the home.

In the aftermath of the shooting, James was tracked down with the help of information that led federal marshals to a home on Parklawn Avenue in Baltimore, where James was arrested.

James denies his involvement and said the charges are “all lies.”

Opening arguments are expected today before visiting Judge Gary L. Yost from Ashtabula County.
