On the record: Trumbull County

WHAT: Council of Governments meeting Wednesday

The board:

• Announced the Waddell Park pool building and swimming pool in Niles are scheduled to be demolished starting Sept. 6. COG is assisting with funds for the demolition project. COG has helped Niles before with demolitions of Garfield School and the Niles Times building. Niles is planning a splash pad at the location in 2023;

• Reported discussions are taking place between COG’s legal adviser Jeff Goodman and Trumbull County Engineer Randy Smith on a lease proposal for sharing and use of a mower max between communities. COG Chairman Jim LaPolla said the proposal will be reviewed by the COG members with a final vote expected in October;

• Heard from Robert Carr of the Carr Insurance Agency in Warren on a proposal for health benefits for members of COG with each township or municipal member to review whether they want to take the insurance;

• Is looking for a fiscal officer since Barb Scott’s term ends this year. Gary Lees was asked to serve as executive director starting in October;

• Discussed the opioid settlement funds, noting those funds that don’t go to smaller townships go to Trumbull County, and COG officials will speak to county commissioners on receiving the unclaimed money for a county project such as DARE;

• Is reviewing the COG’s constitution for future approval. Members did the same with the bylaws.
