WHAT: Board of Education meeting Wednesday

PRESENT: Beth Haddle, Michele Garman, Mark Haddle and Joel Polonus

ABSENT: Ken Wallace

The board:

• Approved the purchase of six Halo Smart Sensors from Mobilcom at $10,798. High School Principal George Garrett said the sensors can detect vapes and also breaking of glass in rooms. He said the sensors will serve as deterrents to students who may cause vandalism or vape inside the school. ESSER funds, which came from COVID-19 relief funds, will cover the cost;

• Heard from Haddle the strategic planning committee has met and is working on a vision and mission statement for the school district. A community survey is being sent out to residents in Fowler and Vienna for input;

• Heard from Superintendent Russell McQuaide the stands for the athletic complex will arrive soon, but the press box will be in late August. The first few home varsity football games will be at the Lakeview schools complex with the expected first game at the new completed Mathews complex set for Sept. 16. A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new complex will be set at a later date;

• Heard from McQuaide that sinks for the new restrooms at Baker Elementary are scheduled to arrive and be installed before start of school year on Aug. 22;

• Approved Jared Terlecky as head baseball coach at $4,736.
