WHAT: Board of education meeting Thursday

PRESENT: Tony Perrone, Mary Ann McMahon, Kimberly Barrell, Christopher Chieffo and Michele Lamb

The Niles Board of Education began its meeting Thursday with a moment of silence for Niles Primary School Principal Leslie Tabor, who died June 17 at 59.

“There are few names as synonymous with Niles Primary as the Tabor name,” board President Tony Perrone said. “I know many of you lost a friend and a great advocate for our young people. I just ask that you keep the Tabor family in your thoughts.”

The board:

• Approved a resolution to take the first step in adding a levy renewal to November’s ballot. Further action will be taken in July;

• Approved the minutes of its May 17 meeting;

• Approved the financial reports for May;

• Accepted bids for property, fleet and liability insurance and approved Liberty Mutual Insurance at the cost of $88,500 for the 2022-23 school year;

• Approved the final appropriations for the 2021-22 school year;

• Approved a temporary budget for the 2022-23 school year;

• Accepted the resignation of five staff members, the employment of 10 staff members and the transfer of six staff members;

• Approved the Local Professional Development Committee representatives for the 2022-23 school year as Ann Woloshak, Caroline Hines, Carol Pantelis and George Sprague Jr.;

• Approved the appointment of 10 athletic supplemental positions for one year;

• Approved the student handbooks for each school;

• Approved a contract renewal with Cadence Care Network to provide school social work, resiliency based programming and behavioral health supports for students;

• Adopted a resolution declaring the district’s intent not to provide career-technical education to students in grades seven and eight, which is required by Ohio law, but can be waived in any given year by submitting a resolution to the Ohio Department of Education;

• Entered into an agreement with Trumbull County Educational Service Center and Community Bus Services Inc. to provide busing for the coming school year.
