Shay to run for county auditor

Tom Shay, Braceville fiscal officer, is running for Trumbull County auditor — setting up a showdown in the Democratic primary with county Recorder Tod Latell.

“I have worked in government accounting my whole professional career and I see this as my next step,” Shay said. “I look forward to serving.”

Auditor Adrian Biviano announced in November that he wouldn’t seek re-election this year.

Biviano first was appointed auditor in 2006 to finish the term of David Hines and has been in the office since 1995, when he was selected as chief deputy.

“Auditor Biviano has served the voters of Trumbull County with distinction and dedication,” Shay said. “I want to continue his tradition of strong and effective leadership. I am excited about the opportunity to share my vision for Trumbull County.”

He added: “Financial transparency, team building and a customer-focused environment are critical to the auditor’s office and that will be my focus if elected.”

When Biviano announced his retirement, Latell picked up nominating petitions from the board of elections for an expected run.

Latell, first elected recorder in 2016, said he is definitely running for auditor.

Shay’s decision “doesn’t change anything on our end. We’re still looking forward to the campaign. We pulled our petitions and we’ll file them.”

Asked about Latell, Shay said: “I’m up to the challenge. I have been speaking with (Democratic) precinct committeemen and I feel good about my messaging and what I have to offer Trumbull County.”

Republican Martha Yoder said she is running for auditor.

Yoder, who’s filed a designation of treasurer with the board of elections for the position, said she has enough signatures to qualify for the ballot, but wants to gather some additional ones as well as “have another set of eyes” review the petitions before she files them.

Feb. 2 is the filing deadline for the May 3 primary.

Shay was first elected Braceville fiscal officer in 2011 as an 18-year-old, winning by 23 votes. He was re-elected in 2015 and 2019. He is also an accountant for a property management company.
