WHAT: Board of Education organizational / regular meeting Friday

PRESENT: Ronda Bonekovic, Sarah Kurpe, Jerry Necastro, Melissa Sydlowski and Derek Mihalcin

The board:

• Named Kurpe president and Sydlowski vice president;

• Approved compensating teachers who open their classrooms daily during lunch period Jan. 24 to June 3 at $1,062 per teacher. Officials said 10 high school classrooms and 12 elementary classrooms have children eating in their rooms so fewer students are in the cafeteria, which allows for social distancing. ESSER COVID-19 funds are being used to cover costs;

• Heard from Superintendent Toby Gibson that work is proceeding to offer drone racing for students that would take place in the gymnasium and outside. Several local schools are planning to offer the program in conjunction with the Trumbull County Educational Service Center;

• Approved a transportation management services agreement with Trumbull Community Action Program (TCAP) / Head Start for students;

• Increased classified substitute worker pay from $9 to $10 per hour effective Jan. 1;

• Approved open enrollment for any school. Gibson said that on average the district gets 60 to 65 open enrollment students at $6,500 per student per year and has about the same leaving the district;

• Set meetings for 6 p.m. the third Wednesday of month with work session at 5:30 p.m.
