Falls school board fills opening

NEWTON FALLS — The Board of Education at a special meeting Thursday named Carole Mazanetz as its newest member, filling a vacancy after former member Julie Stimpert was elected to village council.

Mazanetz, who was sworn in at the meeting, will attend her first official meeting at 6 p.m. Jan. 20. She will serve the remainder of the term through December 2023. If she chooses to continue on the board, she will need to run in the November 2023 election.

Other applicants were David McKinstry and Christene Stinson. No one ran for the seat in the November general election.

Several other school districts, including Brookfield and Southington, also did not have anyone run for seats and are in the process of filling the vacancies this week.

Stimpert in November was elected as council at-Large, replacing Brian Kropp.
