Staying warm in Warren

WARREN — Hundreds of coats, sweaters and scarves donated by Berk Enterprises were distributed to 13 area organizations during an event at Warren Jefferson PK-8 School in partnership with the Warren Rotary.

Approximately 900 coats, 700 scarves and hundreds of sweaters and packs of underwear were piled around the gym Tuesday at Jefferson as school administrators worked to sort items into boxes for groups, including the Warren Family Mission, Community Volunteer Council, Niles City Schools, Rescue Mission and the Salvation Army.

It was the second year for the event, according to Jefferson PK-8 special education supervisor Mesa Morlan, who was running the distribution.

Campus leader Carrie Boyer said that Jefferson was picked for the distribution because of its proximity to most of the organizations and the easy access of getting items in and out of the building. She said the importance of the event was supporting families in the cold winter.

“It doesn’t seem like a lot, but being cold is tough,” Boyer said. She added that it’s nice to have new clothes, especially clothes that are, “not essential” but make you feel good, like the dressy sweaters that were donated.
