On the record — Newton Falls

Newton Falls

WHAT: Village council meeting Nov. 15

PRESENT: John Baryak, Adam Zimmermann, Chris Granchie, Tesa Spletzer and Mayor Ken Kline

• Approved 3-1 the expenditure of $2,000 for local merchants to provide hot and cold drinks for service department employees. Interim Village Manager Pamela Priddy said this has been done annually and funds have been made available with the knowledge of the state auditor’s office. Zimmermann voted against it, saying money should be used elsewhere and employees can bring their own drinks to work;

• Approved rezoning of specific lots on North Center Street and Lock Street. Zoning Inspector Mark Stimpert said once a commercial property is not used for two years, it reverts back to residential. He said there is a potential buyer for the property who needs it to be zoned commercial;

• Voted 3-1 requesting the planning / zoning commission remove from table a variance request by the Newton Falls Commerce Association for a ground sign to be placed in the same location as a prior sign. Granchie said a doctor’s office was previously located on the property. Zimmermann voted against it, indicating council should not dictate to the planning / zoning commission but let them bring recommendations to council;

• Set the annual tree lighting 5 to 7 p.m. today in the downtown area.
