WHAT: Parks board meeting Tuesday

PRESENT: Harry Salapta, Dana Butto and John Yuhasz

The board:

• Was informed trees have been planted at the dog park. Butto said Niles McKinley High School junior and senior art students willl work on painting the dog park dugouts in the spring. Private donations were received for the trees;

• Will seek proposals for the Niles Wellness Center cafe;

• Received a request to host a boys gymnastics event March 18 to 20 at the wellness center. A meeting is set with the promotor on event details;

• Heard from park Director Mark Pallante that bleachers were removed from the parks. He will see about scrapping the aluminum bleachers;

• Heard from Pallante a large tree fell on the tennis court fence at Stevens Park, causing considerable damage. An insurance claim was filed and the fence will be replaced by Youngstown Fence in the next week or two;

• Heard from Pallante bids are being sought for repairs to the wellness center roof. There are leaks and damage was done by a raccoon;

• Approved guidelines for nutrition standards for the wellness center vending machines as recommended by the American Heart Association. The standards will be followed by the vending machines and cafe. AVI Foods, which provides the vending machines, will be given a copy and has agreed to follow the suggestions;

• Reported quotes are being sought for repairs to the Kennedy Park fishing dock estimated at $9,000;

• Discussed the idea of having a cooking class or demonstration at the wellness center or a food vendor in the parking lot.
