WHAT: Board of Education meeting Tuesday

PRESENT: Mark Zuppo, Diane Alejars, Sue Ellen Davis, Karen Thomas and Vince Ragozine

The board:

• Granted permission for the Trumbull County Planning Commission to move forward with the removal of the old roof and putting on a new roof at the Girard Multi-Generational Center. Funding for the project will be a 2021 Community Development Block Grant administered by the county. Zuppo said the school district owns and leases the former Tod Woods School Building for the center. The lease is for $1 per year for 20 years;

• Recognized the Girard High School FIRST Robocats Robotics team No. 379 members and their advisers, Judy Barber O’Brien, Ashraf Hadi and Joseph Jeswald, and community volunteers including engineers and former team members. The team in the past two years had to compete online and did receive the Industrial Design Award and Engineer Design Award and finished 144th out of 1,400 teams worldwide in the 2020-21 season. Hadi said there was no national in-person final event and the teams did not build a new robot, but modified the one from the 2019-20 season, which also did not have in-person final competition due to the pandemic;

• Approved a one-year contract with Trumbull County Educational Service Center for a public / community relations coordinator one day per week;

• Entered into a one-year agreement with TCESC for technology services;

• Approved an agreement with United Way for a Success After Six program, which is an after-school program for elementary children following the summer Success Before Six program that helps prepare children for school;

• Approved under a probationary status a Gay-Straight Alliance Club for the high school and junior high;

• Approved an agreement with TCESC for the online Virtual Learning Academy for students who are taking classes remotely;

• Hired Gary Pitts as a custodian on a one-year contract.
