Kids left alone, mother charged
WARREN — Police investigated a report of a 6-year-old boy and a 9-year-old girl left home alone Monday afternoon in the 1200 block of Belle Street SE.
The mother, identified as Autumn Nye, 29, is charged with two counts of child endangering. Nye pleaded not guilty at arraignment Tuesday morning and was released on a personal bond.
Warren Municipal Court Judge Terry Ivanchak ordered Nye cooperate with Trumbull County Children Services. She is scheduled to appear again in Ivanchak’s court on Dec. 14.
According to a police report, a relative who lives on South Street SE called police, saying the children’s mother was not home and he had found a note on the mailbox stating the children should let themselves into the house, and to lock the door. The note also said the children were not to answer the door for anyone, and a key to the house was in the mailbox.
The relative told officers the children arrived at their home about 4:45 p.m. with them usually getting off the school bus about 4:15 p.m. The report states the children were walking the streets for about 30 minutes.
An officer asked the children where their mother was and the girl stated she was in Erie, Pa., the report states.
The relative told officers this is not the first time the children have wandered around alone.
The officer later talked to the mother who said she was on the highway and had to drop off friends in Erie and she did not mean to be gone so long, the report states.
The children services office was contacted and a case worker allowed the children to stay with the relative until the mother came home.
After the mother returned home about 6:55 p.m., an officer served her with a court summons on the two charges.
