Bazetta names new fire chief

BAZETTA — Township trustees have named Thomas Rink fire chief, effective Oct. 17.

Rink, currently a captain, will be officially sworn in as chief at 7 p.m. today at the township fire department.

Trustee Chairman Ted Webb said six candidates applied. A committee of four fire chiefs interviewed four.

In firefighting for 27 years, Rink has been a captain, a firefighter and paramedic in various departments, mostly Bazetta, and in 2013 briefly was an assistant chief.

Webb said Rink’s contract is being finalized.

Trustees also praised retiring fire Chief Dennis Lewis, who attended his last trustee meeting as chief on Tuesday. He has been in firefighting for 39 years, the past 12 as fire chief.

Webb said Lewis was able to get $2.9 million in grants and funding for the department over the years for equipment and improvements, including a $39,000 grant for a ladder truck worth $700,000.

“It was amazing all the grants and funding he has been able to get for the township when he has been chief,” he said.

Lewis’ last day of work is Oct. 21, and he has worked with Rink in preparing him for his new duties. Lewis’ retirement is Nov. 12.

In other business, trustees set a special meeting for 7 p.m. Thursday at the township administration building to meet with residents of West Lake Drive and Lakeshore Drive on plans for drainage culvert replacement work on Everett Hull Road.

Webb said the project is scheduled this fall with trustees, police and fire wanting to ensure that residents and safety vehicles will be able to get in and out of their neighborhood while work is being done. A short-term road closure will take place.

Trumbull County Engineer’s Office representatives also will attend to speak with residents about the project.
