WHAT: Board of Education meeting Tuesday

PRESENT: Patricia Limperos, Jacqueline Shannon, John Fowley, Julian Walker and Regina Patterson

The board:

• Hired Joseph Austin, middle school teacher; Kelsey Calpin, physical education / health teacher; Jillian Swauger, primary teacher; and Tyler Withem, special education teacher, all on limited contracts for the 2021-22 year;

• Accepted retirements of Karin Kilpatrick Matthews, as Title I family engagement coordinator effective Aug. 31, and Jeanie Zimmer, secretary McGuffey School effective July 30;

• Heard from Superintendent Steve Chiaro that the district received a state grant of $836,000 to cover costs for 209 spots in the district’s preschool program. He said there are 10 preschool units in the district at different buildings with 289 students registered and 320 spots available;

• Heard from Chiaro of various projects being done this summer including an LED lighting project at several buildings and a roof project at Willard PK-8;

• Approved an agreement with Conti Corp. of Lowellville for installing new boilers at Lincoln PK-8 for $277,743, Willard PK-8 for $251,074 and Warren G. Harding High School for $492,141;

• Heard from Athletic Director William Nicholson of plans to honor the 1971 Harding Panthers football team at the Sept. 10 game;

• Received a donation of 28,800 masks from Sam’s Club for students and staff, and 150 flower pots valued at $500 from Adgate’s Garden Center for the kindergarten summer bridge.
