Lordstown approves bid to update track

LORDSTOWN — The Board of Education has approved a $123,990 contract with Astro Turf Corp. for the track renovation to be done this fall.

Superintendent Greg Bonamase said at Wednesday’s meeting the company will start in September placing a top coat on the track, as well as fixing the area where the long jump is located.

In addition, work will be done on drainage issues by the track and also the discus area to help alleviate previous issues with flooding.

Bonamase said the project needs to be done and some fall sports will have to make adjustments when work is done at the track.

While that project will begin shortly, Bonamase said already underway is piping replacement work at the high school. Bonamase said the work is being done on the main floor by Gardiner and Prout Boiling at $325,000.

“The pipes have been in good shape, but there is some work that needs to be done and some replacements necessary,” he said.

That project, as well as updating the fire alarm system, will be completed before school starts Sept. 6. The fire alarm project is being done by Johnson Controls.

“We want to bring the fire alarm systems up to par. The alarms are directly attached to the fire department if they go off,” Bonamase said.

As for the start of the 2021-22 school year, Bonamase said there are plans to open with no masks required, but continue with social distancing, hand sanitizing and cleaning.

Bonamase said the board will wait to hear from local and state officials on any changes in guidelines for opening schools.

“We have been in contact with Frank Migliozzi of the health department and also following any recommendations from the CDC,” he said.

Board members noted case numbers in recent weeks have increased, which is a concern.

The school days will be in person with high school dismissal at 2:30 p.m. and elementary dismissal at 3 p.m.
