WHAT: Township trustee meeting June 7

PRESENT: Doug Emerine, Bill Templeton and Brian Bugos

Trustees:

• Are reviewing options on the need for increased revenue for the fire department. Trustees are looking at a possible replacement or additional fire levy, or a renewal of the current fire levy for the November general election ballot. No decision has been made. The deadline for placing an issue on the ballot is early August;

• Approved a one-year agreement with the Champion school district for the police department to provide a school resource officer at $61,000. The board of education is scheduled to act on the agreement at its June meeting. Officer D.J. Robinson was named the SRO pending school board’s approval;

• Approved $75,000 for various road work and projects to be done this summer by the Trumbull County Engineer’s office;

• Approved Ronyak Paving to pave Copeland and Gertrude avenues, which is an Ohio Public Works Commission project with a $68,940 grant covering 46 percent of the total cost;

• Accepted a new township logo for letterheads and other items designed by Alexander Drob, who won a contest hosted by Champion Rotary to create a new logo;

• Met in executive session for negotiations with the fire department union to replace a contract that expired May 31;

• Received a $2,000 grant for mosquito spraying with the next spraying set for July 5;

• Hired two part-time fire reserves, Joseph Danks and Cody Bartholomew;

• Heard from several residents who complained of a property owner with a very high fence in their backyard off Alva Avenue. Zoning officials reviewed the matter and the fence is too high;

• Approved a zoning amendment changing the property setback for rear yards from 10 to 5 feet;

• Approved direct deposit for township employees’ paychecks;

• Are seeking a part-time zoning inspector on an as-needed basis to fill in when the zoning inspector takes vacation this summer and for other matters;

• Are reviewing health care options with different brokers with no decision made.
