Nursing home cases steady, rise in prisons

YOUNGSTOWN — The number of COVID-19 cases at Mahoning Valley nursing homes and assisted living facilities remained essentially unchanged this week, compared to last week.

There were 29 cases in Mahoning County, three in Columbiana County and none in Trumbull County.

In Mahoning County, the number of staff cases rose by two while patient cases dropped by two. There are still 21 facilities with at least one case.

Austinwoods nursing home in Austintown rose to three staff cases this week, but has no patient cases.

Across the state, staff cases rose from 395 to 429, and patient cases dropped from 531 to 528.

COVID-19 nursing home deaths stayed at 274 this week in Mahoning County, but they rose by one in Trumbull County (to 150) and Columbiana County (to 79).

Staff cases at the Ohio State Penitentiary in Youngstown this week remained at one, and inmate cases rose from one to two.

The number of staff virus cases at the private Northeastern Ohio Correctional Center in Youngstown remained at two, and the number of inmate cases remained at zero.

The number of staff cases at the Trumbull Correctional Institution in Leavittsburg rose from three to four, and the number of inmate cases remained at zero.

In all of Ohio’s prisons, there are 60 staff cases this week, up from 54 last week. Inmate cases across the state rose from 34 to 47.
