Man pleads guilty in federal sex case

YOUNGSTOWN — A Warren man pleaded guilty to a federal charge of sex trafficking of a minor before federal Judge Bonita Pearson via teleconference Thursday.

Derwin Norman Jr., 26, formerly of Autumn Drive, Warren, is to submit to a background investigation before sentencing, which was scheduled for Pearson’s court at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 19. He made his change of plea through a video teleconference with the Youngstown courtroom that has been closed to the public throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

Norman remains in federal custody.

Court documents show the federal sex trafficking of a minor charge dealt with a victim under age 18 in an incident between Feb. 27, 2017, and March 8, 2017.

Norman was sentenced on June 27, 2017, to 28 months in state prison after he plead guilty to illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented materials, compelling prostitution and escape. Norman was arrested in March 2017 for a parole violation.

After an investigation, police discovered he had compelled a minor into prostitution. He was labeled by Trumbull County Common Pleas Judge Andrew D. Logan as a Tier II sex offender, which means after his release, he must register his address with a local sheriff’s office twice per year for 25 years.
