WHAT: Board of education meeting Feb. 17

PRESENT: Ronda Bonekovic, George Economides, Sarah Kurpe, Jerry Nicastro and Melissa Sydlowski

The board:

• Heard from Superintendent Toby Gibson the district is expecting to receive near $1 million in pandemic relief funding to be used for remote learning, disinfecting and cleaning of buildings, replacing Chromebooks, summer learning programs for dealing with summer learning loss by students, and other materials;

• Heard from Gibson he is in talks with local Head Start programs to possibly offer preschool in the district for the 2021-22 year with the matter to be addressed once the coronavirus pandemic lessens;

• Were informed of a possible partnership with Eastern Gateway Community College for an entrepreneurial program for students to earn college credit. The district did approve an agreement with Eastern Gateway for high school and middle school students to take dual credit program courses effective May 31, which allows for classes to be taken in the summer months;

• Heard from Adam Lewis, director of teaching, learning, and accountability, that 40 percent of the district students in grades kindergarten to 12th met or exceeded scores passing winter diagnostic testing. He said teachers and administrators are reviewing the test results to see where more focus needs to be and where student growth has been made. Additional diagnostic testing will be done in the summer;

• Heard from Economides that a wish list of needed items for the district is being reviewed and will be presented at the March 17 board meeting. Economides, chairman of buildings and grounds, said items include buses and improvements at bus garage;

• Approved the 2021-22 school year calendar with first day for students Aug. 26 and last day June 3, 2022;

• Accepted resignation of Kristine Workman as a bus driver effective Jan. 28 and approved her as a substitute bus driver on an as-needed basis for the school year.
