Mom charged after kids left home alone

WARREN — Two women are charged with endangering children and obstructing official business after police found four children, ages 6 and younger, home alone about 11:40 a.m. Monday in a Fifth Street apartment.

Brayasha A. Clark, 27, 1306 Fifth St., Apt. 4, is charged with four counts of child endangering. Shaquala R. Grant, 29, 556 Douglas St. NW, is charged with a single count of obstructing official business.

Both women appeared in Warren Municipal Court on Tuesday morning.

Grant pleaded not guilty to obstructing justice before Judge Terry Ivanchak. Bond was set at $2,500 personal recognizance. She is to return to court at 10:15 a.m. March 23.

Clark was told to return for arraignment at 9 a.m. Feb. 9.

Officers went to 1306 Fifth St. after receiving a call that an unsupervised 3-year-old was seen hanging out of the window of a home. When an officer knocked on the door several times, a small child attempted to open the door but could not, the police report states.

A few moments later, Grant drove up in a red Dodge Durango and asked what was wrong. When told of the complaint, Grant first claimed that it was her house and that a neighbor was inside with the children, the police report states. But she said she could not find her keys and pounded on the door and until one of the children was able to unlock it, police said.

Clark then walked up, saying she was supposed to be watching the children but went out for a few moments to another friend’s house.

Police said the women told conflicting stories.

Officers eventually learned that Clark is the children’s mother. She told officers she went to the store to get the children something to eat.

The officer told Clark that Trumbull County Children Services would be notified. Once contacted, however, the officer was told by the agency that a case filed already had been opened by Mahoning County Children Services. The Mahoning County CSB said it would follow up, the police report states.
