WHAT: Board of Education meeting Monday
PRESENT: Dan Denman, Tami Morrison, Tom Donaldson, Kevin Blair and Dan Schwartz
The board:
• Named Donaldson as president and Morrison as vice president;
• Heard from Superintendent Perry Nicholas, who reported that third-grade students last fall took the state reading test from the Ohio Department of Education, with a school total score of 704, which is higher than the state average of 683. He said 56 percent of district third-graders passed compared to 50 percent in 2019 and 49 percent in 2018. Nicholas said all third-graders have to pass the reading guarantee test to advance to fourth grade;
• Heard from Nicholas that the district’s student enrollment is at 648 students this year compared to 670 last year;
• Hired Heidi Stiffler as seventh-grade girls basketball coach;
• Approved committee appointments: Denman as the board’s representative to Trumbull Career and Technical Center board; Blair, legislative and representative to the Ohio School Board Association; Denman and Schwartz, finance; Donaldson and Denman, buildings and grounds; Morrison, student achievement; and Donaldson, athletics;
• Heard from Morrison of efforts to hold competitions such as the prep bowl virtually;
• Set meetings for 6 p.m. the second Wednesday at the high school media center.
