Date set for murder trial

Man accused in June slaying at Quinby Park

WARREN — The man accused of taking part in the June 29 slaying of a Warren man after a birthday party at Quinby Park is scheduled to go on trial March 1, 2021.

Charles J. Parker, 24, of 2490 Kenwood Drive SW, appeared for a pre-trial hearing Tuesday before Trumbull County Common Pleas Judge Andrew D. Logan. Parker’s attorney, Mary Ellen Ditchey, said she has received all the evidence from the prosecution.

Parker was indicted on charges of aggravated murder with a firearm specification, having weapons as a felon, tampering with evidence, possession of cocaine with forfeiture specification, and possession of a fentanyl-related compound with forfeiture specification. The drug charges were not part of the Quinby crime, the indictment report noted.

On the murder charge, Parker faces a possible 15 years to life in prison, plus an additional three years because a gun was used in the crime.

Parker has been jailed since July 7 in lieu of a $1 million bond. Parker’s arrest and indictment for murder triggered a probation violation for Parker’s 2019 conviction for a illegal conveyance of drugs and possession of cocaine charges. Logan said a decision of probation violation won’t be coming until after the murder case is resolved.

Another pre-trial hearing has been set for Jan. 19.

Reports showed that Warren police were called out shortly before 10 p.m. June 29 to Quinby Park off Austin Avenue SW for the fatal shooting. Police identified the victim as Robert J. Johnson, 26, of 2325 Burton St. SE.

Prosecutors say Parker had attended the birthday party at Quinby Park and got into some sort of altercation with a minor that turned into a fight with the child’s father. Detectives said a man with a hoodie, whom a witness identified as Parker, then returned to the Quinby Park with a gun and fired shots at Johnson, an affidavit states.
