Ohio shatters record for daily cases again

Friday was another record-shattering day for new COVID-19 cases reported in the state.

The state surpassed a milestone Thursday, cresting 3,000 new cases in one day for the first time in the pandemic, and just a day later shattered that record with nearly 4,000 cases in one day.

The state reported 3,845 cases Friday, while 3,590 were posted Thursday. The state reported 16 new deaths, bringing the total to 5,291.

Deaths are slightly higher than the 21-day average. Over the past three weeks an average of 14 deaths caused by COVID-19 were reported, with a high of 66 on Oct. 21. The 21-day trend for new cases is 2,223. The fewest number of cases reported in one day over the last three weeks was 1,356 on Oct. 10.

Trumbull County joined Mahoning County as a high-incidence, red-level county on Thursday as part of the 78 percent of Ohioans who live somewhere with the same risk levels for spread of the virus, according to Gov. Mike DeWine.

No new deaths were reported locally on Friday.

Cases increased by 46 in Mahoning County for 267 new cases in a week.

Thirty-six new cases were reported in Trumbull County, making it 197 new cases since Oct. 23.

In Columbiana County, 19 new cases contributed to the 113 reported since Oct. 23.

As spread of the virus reaches unprecedented numbers, DeWine and local health officials are pleading with people to wear their masks, avoid gatherings and limit their interactions with people with whom they do not live.
