Tot left in running car; mother charged
WARREN — A Warren woman was charged with child endangering Tuesday afternoon after police said she left her 3-year-old girl in a running vehicle parked outside the Giant Eagle on Mahoning Avenue NW.
And a later check revealed two other children were left alone, police reported.
Meshia Spencer, 29, of 2304 Stewart Drive NW, pleaded not guilty Wednesday morning to the charge. Municipal Judge Terry F. Ivanchak released Spencer on a personal recognizance bond and ordered she have no unsupervised contact with children unless Trumbull County Children Services approved. Ivanchak set a hearing for 10:15 a.m. Oct. 27.
While police officers were in the grocery store about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, a police report states a customer alerted them a child was in a vehicle in the parking lot.
Officers observed a woman get into the white vehicle with the child sitting in a car seat holding a phone in her hand.
The woman admitted to leaving the child in the car with the engine running, but she told officers the girl was on the phone with her father. After a short discussion, Spencer was taken into custody.
Children Services was called to handle custody matters for the child.
During the investigation, the report states, it was learned two other children were left alone at the woman’s home. A neighbor was authorized by Children Services to take care of the three children, the report states.
While at the county jail, Spencer complained of a hurt wrist. She was taken to St. Joseph Warren Hospital for treatment under a police hold. Jail records show she was booked into the jail at 8:11 p.m. Tuesday and released at 10:23 p.m.
