Man accused in arson of church sign

WARREN — A Scott Street NE man is charged with arson after police were called Monday morning to the First United Church of Christ for a suspicious person.

William Walker, 29, will be arraigned this morning in Warren Municipal Court.

The pastor of the church at 280 E. Market St. saw on his cellphone security camera app a man sleeping on the front door step about 5:50 a.m. He told the man to leave, the police report states.

When officers arrived they saw the man walking down the front steps and the report states officers saw something on fire in the church doorway. The man told officers he lit the sign on the door on fire because he was told to leave.

The officer put out the flames on the laminated sign and arrested Walker, who was also wanted on a Niles Municipal Court warrant.
