Fundraiser benefits TFF kids

WARREN — During the summer, volleyball players had the chance to enjoy the sport at Trumbull Family Fitness and receive instruction from professional volleyball player Nia Grant while raising funds for a children’s program at the center.

Grant said because of the fallout from the coronavirus pandemic, the fitness center struggled, so a fundraiser was held for several weeks this summer to help Trumbull Family Fitness kids program, which is held each year to benefit children with various activities.

She led several once-per-week volleyball games with participants paying to be part of the event.

“During COVID everyone struggled, including raising funds to help the kid’s club. I really like what Paulette (Edington) and others here do for the kids in the community. It is very important,” Grant said.

Grant, a Warren native who has lived in Europe, said she offered to lead the classes and games not only to let local volleyball players enjoy the game, but also to help local children serviced by TFF.

Participants included local high school and college volleyball players.

“There were some people who were afraid of COVID who did not attend but gave donations. It was $15 to play and $5 to watch,” she said.

Grant said she plans to do another event this year, hoping the virus is lessened or gone.

“Volleyball is a big part of my life. This was something I wanted to do while also helping people out. Programs like this are very important” said Adam Hamad, who is a college volleyball coach at the University of Miami.

Grant said she hopes she is a role model to others, and local players said she was.

Howland resident Alexia Spangler said she took part in the event for a couple weeks.

“It was fun and a good event to be part of,” she said.

Spangler, who plays volleyball at Howland High School, said she had no problem paying to be part of the event.

Campbell resident India Armour said she heard about the program and thought it would be fun and interesting.

“It was nice to meet Nia and for her to help instruct us. It was worthwhile taking part. I am glad I was here,” said Armour, who will be in college.

In addition to the games there was a raffle and other fundraising.
