Cortland fills council opening
CORTLAND — City officials at a special meeting Monday named resident John Picuri to fill an unexpired term on council.
Picuri will fill the remaining term of former councilwoman Patti Keller, who resigned this summer after her residency changed.
Picuri was selected from 13 applicants who sought to fill the position, including eight who were interviewed Monday evening.
Those who were scheduled to be interviewed were Ronald Baldwin, David Bevilacqua, Frank Daugherty, Thomas Foley, Kevin Gavitt, Brian Hodor, Richard McDermott and Picuri.
Picuri will fill the remainder of Keller’s term through December 2023.
Councilman Kevin Piros said Picuri will be sworn in during the Oct. 5 meeting.
Piros said Picuri is already familiar with serving the public having served on the city’s park board and zoning / planning commission.
“He is very familiar with serving the public and has the experience serving on different boards in the city. He knows about what is involved serving on a board and will bring that experience to council,” Piros said.
He said Picuri serves as deputy director for the Ohio Department of Transportation District 12, Cleveland.
“We had many very qualified people who applied for this position,” Piros said, noting all would have served well.
As deputy director for ODOT. Picuri assists in strategic planning, short- and long-term goal setting, performance measurement and policy development and deployment on both the statewide and districtwide level.
