On the record – Johnston

WHAT: Township trustees meeting Monday

PRESENT: Davis Denman, James Carnes and Dominic Marchese

Trustees:

• Discussed plans to have the 911 tower from the 1960s behind the fire department taken down. Denman said he spoke with Trumbull County Engineer Randy Smith about it, and plans are to place the tower for sale on govdeals.com. Carnes said this is the smaller of the two towers behind the fire department;

• Had discussed at the July meeting concerns of statues being taken down nationwide. Marchese said they were going to check with the governor’s office on the status of the Christopher Columbus statue and noted if it is not wanted, they could place it at the township park. He said Newton Falls village officials last month also discussed statues with village manager David Lynch seeking to accept certain statues, including Columbus. Marchese said it is a concern when an historical statue ends up sitting in a warehouse when it should be viewed by the public;

H• eard from Marchese that a grant was received to create a 32×40-foot pad for the recycling center by the fire department. He said the money also can be used for security cameras to keep an eye on the center to make sure people are not dumping trash there;

• Approved advertising for sale a 2,000-gallon fire tanker with body and pumper. Bids for the vehicle will be opened at the November meeting. Marchese said the vehicle will be sold in Ohio Township Magazine;

• Scheduled a scrap tire collection for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 12 by the fire department.
