Woman charged following standoff

VIENNA — Diane K. Zipay, 50, 4355 Seminole Terrace Road, faces misdemeanor charges of child endangering, domestic violence, using weapons while intoxicated, and a felony charge of obstructing official business following a standoff at her township home.

Police went to Zipay’s home around 8 p.m. Sunday after a man drove to the Vienna Township Police Department with his niece, according to a police report. The 13-year-old girl said her grandmother and guardian was intoxicated and became violent, striking her in the head, and threatening her with a bat. The woman then got a handgun and told the girl she was going to shoot herself, and held the gun to her own head, the report states.

The girl ran from the house, called her grandfather, who called her uncle to pick her up. She stayed at the police department while Brookfield police, Ohio State Highway Patrol, the Mahoning Valley Crisis Response Team and negotiator Vince Peterson came to the house to assist Vienna police.

They could not make contact with Zipay or see movement in the house, the report states. Police cleared the scene and got warrants for her arrest instead.
