Man sentenced to 7 years in armed robbery of Valley View mart

Pleaded guilty to stealing from Valley View mart in Cortland

WARREN — A Youngstown man was sentenced Monday to seven years in prison after pleading guilty to a July 15, 2019, armed robbery of Valley View Food Mart in Cortland.

Clayton Felder Jr., 21, 355 E. Philadelphia Ave., Youngstown, was found guilty of aggravated robbery with a firearm specification, having weapons under disability, vandalism and two counts of harassment with a bodily substance.

Warren Municipal Court records show vandalism and harassment charges were filed earlier this month while Felder was being held at the Trumbull County jail. He was indicted June 19 on felony charges of vandalism and harassment with a bodily substance, court records show.

Trumbull County Common Pleas Court Judge Peter J. Kontos sentenced Felder to seven years and ordered him to pay restitution in the amount of $476 to the sheriff’s office for damage done at the jail. He also was ordered to forfeit his handgun to the Cortland Police Department, court records show.

Felder will be sent to the Lorain Correctional Institution.

Felder took cash from the registers at Valley View, 560 S. High St., Cortland, and fled on foot toward Mosquito Lake, according to previous reports. Surveillance video shared on social media and a tip from the public that Felder was at his girfriend’s house in Bazetta led to Felder’s arrest one day after the incident, reports state.

In addition to the robbery charge filed by Cortland police, Felder also had several outstanding warrants from Cuyahoga County at the time of his arrest last summer.

He pleaded not guilty to charges in September 2019, but changed his plea to guilty Monday.
