WHAT: Maplewood Board of Education special meeting Wednesday

PRESENT: Dan Schwartz, Tami Morrison, Dan Denman, Tom Donaldson and Kevin Blair

The board:

• Heard from Superintendent Perry Nicholas of plans for upgrades to the automation system that controls temperatures in the rooms at the elementary school, noting heating can’t be controlled in some rooms with some colder and others warmer. He said improvements with new controls will be made this summer to correct the problem;

• Accepted the resignation of Dixie Knight as library aide effective June 30 after 32 years in the district. Knight worked as library aide for 31 years, and one year as a special education aide;

• Heard from Treasurer Merry Smith that in the five-year forecast the state cut $131,000 this year with the same amount expected next year. She said she will have a better view of the district finances by the fall after the additional state cuts, status of whether people are able to get back to work to help the economy and expected 10 percent decrease in property taxes to be collected;

• Heard from Nicholas that the virtual senior commencement was held with administrators doing the best they could to provide seniors with the most memorable graduation possible;

• Reported at 11 a.m. the first Monday of each month June to August, Second Harvest Food Bank will provide a food distribution to local residents at the high school parking lot;

• Approved supplemental contracts for Dave Dieter as athletic director and Mike Richards as assistant athletic director, as well as various other contracts for coaches of different sports. Nicholas said officials wanted the contracts to be approved and in place based on when sports can start again.
