WHAT: Trumbull Career and Technical Center Board of Education meeting March 12

PRESENT: Cheryl Basista, Aaron Brazofsky, Ronda Bonekovic, Kelly Boyle, Carla Click, Debra Davis, Dan Denman, Diana DeVito, Robert Faulkner, Don Galbreath, Albert Haberstroh, Tom Hart, Sue Ellen Harris-Davis, Scott Lehman, Susan Longacre, John Phillips, and Brooke Vondrasek,

ABSENT: Tim Gibson, James Koehler and Linda Silvidi

The board:

• Discussed the situation with the public schools being closed because of the coronavirus through early April. Members said they were most concerned about districts with many students on free and reduced lunches being fed during the time out of school. DeVito said she hopes state officials will not have any state testing this spring. Longacre said they will see if days have to be made up since they did not have to be during the 2013-14 severe winter where schools were closed for many days;

• Heard from Superintendent Jason Gray, who said he is reviewing the situation on programs at the center that have state board tests such as nursing and cosmetology with some program only permitted to do so much online. He said the state may make adjustments because of current circumstances;

• Announced the Ohio School Board Association conference on March 30 has been canceled;

• Heard from Academic Supervisor Paula Baco that administrators are reviewing enrollment for programs for the 2020-21 school year, She said machinery/ manufacturing has only three students enrolled and may be part of job training next year while other programs such as animal science and welding are closed because of maximum enrollment;

• Granted a five-year contract to Treasurer Cody Holecko effective August 2020 to July 2025; granted three-year administrative contracts to Supervisor Cara DeToro and Dean of Students David Phillips July 2020 to June 2023; and granted two-year administrative contracts to Supervisors Anina Karlovic and Melissa Starkey July 2020 to June 2022;

• Were informed Business Professionals of America state competition April 20 will have onsite and videotaped submissions and competition and testing being done onsite. The Skills USA state competition in Columbus was set for April 6 to 8;

• Heard from Baco that committee has met with local business people to see what programs will be in the most demand for graduates in upcoming years;

• Approved the career exploration summer enrichment program June 8 to 12 for school children to experience dental assisting, engineering, visual design, cosmetology, and other programs;

• Approved the “Nuts, Bolts and Thingamajigs” summer manufacturing camp for one week for students to experience welding, engineering and manufacturing;

• Approved Kimberly Jarock as licensed practical nurse adult education instructor at $28 per hour. Gray said the school is looking to add a day class when they find another practical nursing instructor;

• Re-employed Gary Ghizzoni as motorcycle grant coordinator / adult education consultant at $39 per hour not to exceed 21 hours per week effective July 1, and re-employ Kevin Milyah as motorcycle repair employee in the adult education department not to exceed six hours per week;

• Approved Pierce Farm to rent 46 acres of land for harvesting purposes. The agreement begins in the spring for one year at $500 paid before planting. Gray said soybeans are harvested;

• Transferred $1,000 to the FFA Chapter fund as staff who are six chapter advisors donated their pay back;

• Announced the senior completion ceremony is set for 7 p.m. May 19 at Packard Music Hall.

WHAT: Trumbull County Educational Service Center Governing Board meeting Monday

PRESENT: Jeff Dreves, Allen Ryan, Denise Domhoff and William Holland

The board:

• Approved an agreement with Lordstown school district for interim superintendent services for the school year. Lew Lowery was named the interim superintendent last month at $375 per day on as needed basis with the resignation of former superintendent Terry Armstrong, who was hired as the Newton Falls school treasurer;

• Approved an agreement with the Hubbard school district for technician services;

• Hired Michael Klem as a technician on a one-year contract at $39,197 with all costs to be paid by Hubbard schools;

• Hired Stacy Foster as assistant treasurer on three-year contract; Amanda Mancino as social worker on two-year contract; and Laurie Ruane as administrative assistant on three-year contract;

• Granted three-year, 216-day contracts to curriculum / instruction supervisors Lauren DeJulio, Brice Harris, Yvonne Lipinsky, Ed Mackiewicz, Jenny Pancake and Amy Rossler; preschool supervisor Gerlina Melillo, education supervisor Laura Revetti, special education supervisor Chris Canaan; and psychology supervisor Melanie Shipman;

• Accepted the resignation of instructor Linda Prokop effective Feb. 12;

• Approved an agreement with Keys to Literacy for professional development and supplies related to the Striving Reader grant;

• Approved a renewal agreement with Frontline Education for absence and time management for staff call-off service effective to June 30;

• Approved an agreement with Walter Haverfield for bus driver training on Aug. 5;

• Entered into a five-year agreement with Cooksey Inc. for water coolers at cost to be paid from the Medical Mutual Wellness funds;

• Approved an agreement between the center with Riverside Local School District for HH services;
