Niles man pleads to reduced charges

WARREN — A Niles man pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and domestic violence charges connected to a case involving his wife.

Christopher A. Russell Jr., 27, 123 George St., Niles, appeared before Common Pleas Court Judge W.Wyatt McKay, who questioned the female victim. She agreed to the reduced charges, saying she was trying to work on her marriage. The woman also allowed McKay to drop the temporary protection and no-contact orders against her husband.

The original indictment against Russell included three counts of rape, attempted rape, kidnapping, domestic violence and tampering with evidence in connection to a Nov. 18 incident investigated by Niles police. The woman, 24, was injured, according to a police report.

Russell, who now faces a potential 18-month prison sentence, will undergo a background investigation before sentencing.
