Incumbent appeals court judges named ‘preferred candidates’

WARREN — The Trumbull County Bar Association deemed the two incumbents seeking re-election to the 11th District Court of Appeals as the “preferred candidates” in the races.

Obtaining the “preferred candidates” status are Judges Timothy P. Cannon of Painesville and Cynthia Westcott Rice of Brookfield.

To received the status, a person must receive more than two-thirds of the votes cast by bar association members who have a preference.

Cannon and Rice are running unopposed in the Democratic primaries for the two positions.

They are being challenged in the general election by Republicans Matt Lynch of Bainbridge Township and Sarah Thomas Kovoor of Warren, respectively.

Lynch was elected to the court of appeals in 2018 and filed to challenge Cannon. If Lynch is elected, he would start a six-year term Feb. 9, 2021, and Gov. Mike DeWine, a Republican, would then appoint his successor.

The 11th District Court, based in Warren, includes Trumbull, Ashtabula, Geauga, Lake and Portage counties.
