Ex-hospital worker pleads to sex crimes
12 counts involve 3 victims
WARREN — A former St. Joseph Warren Hospital employee once accused of 25 sex-related criminal counts pleaded guilty Friday afternoon to about half of them during a hearing before Trumbull County Common Pleas Judge Ronald Rice.
Michael M. Brown Jr., 34, Chatham Lane, Youngstown, pleaded guilty to one count each of attempted sexual battery, voyeurism, sexual battery and gross sexual imposition, two counts of illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material and six counts of of pandering sexually oriented matter involving minors.
He worked as a transporter at the hospital.
“There were three victims,” Trumbull County Assistant Prosecutor Gabe Wildman said. “We did not have enough evidence to charge him on a fourth victim.”
Brown initially was placed on administrative leave after early reports of the sexual assaults were levied. He was fired from the hospital after further information was obtained.
According to an affidavit, the Warren Police Department received a complaint Feb. 18, 2019, from St. Joseph Warren Hospital that one of its employees, later identified as Brown, was taking an 88-year-old female patient from the sixth floor to the first floor when he exposed himself and attempted to force her to touch him and engage in a sex act.
Brown also attempted to place his hands in the woman’s private area, the affidavit states.
A second victim reported Brown made multiple unwelcomed sexual advances toward her. Brown, according to the victim, was transporting her from the hospital’s emergency department to other areas when he stopped by a hospital bathroom and / or locker room, went in and began playing with himself in full view of the patient, the affidavit states. Brown, according to the affidavit, came out of the bathroom and made several sexual comments to her.
A hospital video image shows the man untying the top of the woman’s gown, taking out his phone and snapping a few pictures before she could get her top back on, the affidavit states.
Brown, according to the search warrant, denied having sexual contact with the 88-year-old victim and he told police the second victim’s top already was undone and her breasts were exposed. He also denied taking photographs.
Wildman is requesting the judge give him consecutive sentences in connection to these charges, which will place him in prison for 19 years.
A pre-sentencing investigation is being conducted.
