Champion trustees to canvass for sound wall

CHAMPION — Township trustees plan to walk the Stewart Street area Saturday to get more signatures to submit to the Ohio Department of Transportation for getting a sound wall placed in the neighborhood near the state Route 5 / Route 82 bypass.

Trustee Chairman Doug Emerine said he and trustee Brian Bugos plan to stop at the remaining 20 homes on the street where they have not been able to speak to residents.

Residents in the neighborhood have complained to trustees of the loud noise from tractor-trailers, motorcycles, engine brakes and other traffic coming from the heavily traveled route. The solution is a sound wall barrier that would alleviate highway noise for residents of Stewart Street, Relim Drive, Brookside Drive and Mahoning Place.

Officials said to qualify for the barrier, homes must be built before the highway was put in, and the noise in the homes must reach a sound level of more than 67 decibels.
