Champion High student dies in Pennsylvania crash

NEW CASTLE, Pa. — A Champion High School senior was killed in a two-vehicle crash that happened around 9 a.m. Friday in Wampum, according to the New Castle post of the Pennsylvania State Police.

A report from the PSP states Savannah Smith, 18, was driving a 2008 Hyundai Accent when she failed to come to a complete stop on state Route 288 and crossed on to state Route 18 in front of a flatbed truck hauling a dumpster driven by Chad Tirko, 41, of Hooversville, Pa. Both drivers were wearing seat belts, the report states.

Smith was pronounced dead at the scene by the Lawrence County coroner. The crash still is under investigation.

Champion Superintendent John Grabowski issued the following statement:

“We were notified earlier today that a Champion High School student was involved in a car accident. Our deepest condolences go out to all family, friends and community members who have been touched by this tragic loss. No words can describe the sadness that we all feel over this tragedy. We have enacted our crisis management plan and will have grief counselors in all buildings starting Tuesday to support our students and staff as long as they are needed.”
