WHAT: Board of Education meeting Thursday

PRESENT: Betsy Dunn, Steve Gilanyi, Al Haberstroh, Terry Kelly and Richard Selep

The board:

• Presented an honorary diploma to resident Jack Elston Sr., 94, who left high school in his senior year to serve in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1945. The lifelong Southington resident worked as a pattern maker and has four children and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Elston attended school at the Chalker building. Superintendent Rocco Nero said the state has come up with an honorary diploma to honor those who left school to serve their country in the military. Elston plans to attend the school alumni events;

• Announced Hall of Fame inductions will be Jan. 12;

• Heard from Nero of plans to look at canceling school for students on days teachers need to attend professional development;

• Approved Christina Miller as an interpreter through Title I to assist Amish children with test taking and Allison Brayles as a math tutor at four hours per day;

• Set the organizational meeting for 6 p.m. Jan. 8 at school complex media center;

• Set board member compensation at $80 per meeting;

• Approved the use of the school complex on March 17 and Nov. 3 by the Trumbull County Board of Elections. There will be no school for students those two days.
